Madres attempts to combat the internalized racism that I have witnessed in navigating Mexican and Mexican American communities. Indigenous features are often undesired, and the average Mexican denies ties to indigenous origins. This piece, however, attempts to dignify the image of the women who preceded the modern Mexican, our original mothers. Their protective spirit and ancestral knowledge have carried an entire civilization for years and centuries to come.
